Goal Setting is a Skill
I love setting goals and measuring progress. But it’s taken me a really long time to get good at setting them.
Hypothesis: Goal setting is a skill. One that can be developed and improved over time.
When I started getting serious about setting goals for myself (probably in my early 20s) - my goals tended to be: too vague (i.e. get more fit), sometimes unrealistic (i.e. make $100K by tomorrow), and believe it or not I set too many goals, making my failure rate high.
Classic rookie mistakes.
Then I read somewhere: "We tend to overestimate what we can do in a day and underestimate what we can do in a year." - Unknown
Hmmm - that felt oddly true.
I then met a guy by the name of Dan Miller and he introduced me to something that has been REALLY powerful for me ever since.
90 day plans.
So, I started setting goals for 90 days - that’s it.
There were three components of the 90 day plan:
Results I wanted to get after the 90 days was up. I was in sales so commission was a big one for me, but it can be any measurable result.
What I was going do DO to get the results. Can’t get in shape if you don’t go to the gym. These are the habits I needed to do or create to get the results I wanted.
Who were the people I would work with to get the results? This could be prospects, could be my manager or mentor; who in this period would I lean into to help me get the results I wanted or hold me accountable to the habits I committed to.
Once I incorporated 90 day plans, my goal setting skill leveled up a notch and my life hasn’t been the same since - that was 2005.
It’s the beginning of Q2.
It’s time to get a 90 day plan and start to refine your goal setting skills.
